Gary Downey (ill), M/L Will McDonald The Board of Directors of the Beaumont Chapter met after the regular chapter meeting on 15 Oct 2001. The sole order of business was to review and decide on a course of action regarding a complaint placed by Coach Dan Hooks of West Orange-Stark regarding actions of Mr. Gene Watkins in a WO-S at PN-G junior varsity football game on 11 Oct 2001. The complaint centered on remarks made by Mr. Watkins to the JV coaching staff and the touching of one coach in the chest with his finger. Mr. Hooks was not present at the game, but stated that his coaching staff was upset and not able to defend themselves due to UIL emphasis on behavior of sub-varsity coaches. It is not in dispute that Mr. Watkins assessed two Unsportsmanlike Conduct fouls against the WO-S bench just prior to the actions under complaint. Coach Hooks filed his complaint on Monday, October 12, by telephone with the Chapter Secretary and also by e-mail with the Chapter President. After deliberation by the Beaumont Chapter Board of Directors, it was resolved that a special committee would be convened to conduct an investigation into the events and make a report back to the chapter Board of Directors. Mr. Bob Wortham agreed to lead the special committee, and two non-board chapter members will be asked to participate on the special committee. The chapter members to be asked to serve are Tommy Trahan and Chris Wohleb. 2nd Vice-President John Ballard asked the Chapter Secretary to write a letter
to Coach Hooks with a copy to the UIL and TASO informing them that the board had
taken action to form an investigative committee which is charged with
determining the facts and reporting the same and its recommendations back to the
board. Final action will be a decision of the Beaumont Chapter Board of
Directors. Geoffrey Kret, Secretary |
