Beaumont Chapter Football Officials
Association\ Present: Pres. Gary Downey, 2nd VP Greg Peveto, Sec/Tr. Geoff Kret, M/L Will McDonald, Div. 2 Rep John Payton, Div. 3 Rep. Mike Defee, Div. 4 Rep Greg Sims, Div. 5 Rep James Roberson Absent: 1st VP John Ballard, Div. 1 Rep Bob Wortham The Board of Directors of the Beaumont Chapter met prior to the regular chapter meeting on 20 Aug 2001. The sole order of business was to review and decide on a course of action regarding an ejection of football chapter and board member Mike V. Defee from a PN-G vs. Livingston baseball playoff game by the plate umpire. The board sat as an investigative body and reviewed correspondence to President Gary Downey from the baseball chapter President Mike Kilmer, who just so happened to be the plate umpire who ejected Mr. Defee. Mr. Defee was given an opportunity to tell his side of the story and then was dismissed from the meeting. It was noted that Mr. Defee was attending the game as a fan and particularly as a father of a senior player. Mr. Defee did not dispute that he was critical of some calls made by the 3rd base umpire. The criticism offered was not loud or disruptive. A dispute does exist concerning whether Mr. Defee was on the field. Mr. Defee contends that he was standing in the shade of the PNG dugout, where no fence exists. Mr. Kilmer thought that he was within the boundary of the playing enclosure, even though no fence was there to demarcate the line, and ejected Mr. Defee for that reason. Mr. Defee left quietly and without fanfare when he learned he was the fan ejected. Mr. Defee told the Football board of directors that he indeed was critical of the calls of the 3rd base umpire, that he felt then and still felt that they were not of playoff quality level. He did admit that he was in error for placing himself in a position of being critical in public of another official. The board deliberated the material presented and determined that not enough facts were in dispute to warrant further investigation. It was agreed that Mr. Defee owed not the Football Chapter, but rather the Baseball Chapter an apology for putting himself in a public position of being critical of another official. The board resolved to close the matter by requiring Mr. Defee to author a letter of apology to the Baseball Chapter. This action was put into motion by Greg Peveto, seconded by James Roberson, and passed unanimously.
